Claude Opus 5.5 is positioned as Anthropic's flagship model for sustained agentic coding sessions and demanding knowledge work. Its adaptive reasoning is always on and is tied directly to the model that produced the thinking blocks, which means agents can carry context across long, multi-step tool invocations without losing the chain of reasoning they were built on. Because thinking cannot be disabled, applications that previously relied on toggling reasoning on or off have to be rebuilt around an always-reasoning workflow rather than a mode-switching one.
Developers integrating Claude Opus 5.5 need to adjust to several behavior shifts introduced in this release. Forced tool use now returns an error, so callers must let the model decide when to invoke tools instead of steering it. The older computer_20251124 computer use tool is rejected on the Claude API and Google Cloud, pushing agents onto current tool variants. Text that previously appeared between tool calls is now returned inside thinking blocks and arrives empty at the default display setting, so streaming UIs that surfaced that text as live progress will go quiet until they explicitly opt in to a display value that surfaces it. Together these changes make Opus 5.5 a model that assumes autonomous, reasoning-first operation and rewards tooling and interfaces designed for that posture.
