Mistral Small 4 (EU)

Mistral Small 4 (EU) sits inside Mistral AI's mistral-small family and is positioned as a fast, production-oriented model for chat, information extraction, and cost-sensitive agent workflows. The model is released as open weights, and the ExplAIn transparency dossier records a partially-open openness profile (57% overall) with high marks for availability and access methods, reflecting its distribution outside purely closed APIs. Mistral AI is identified as the verified vendor under EU AI Act provider records, with corporate registration in Paris, lending a compliance footprint that matters for European deployments of the EU-tagged variant.

From a practical standpoint, the variant ships with multimodal input handling for text and images alongside text generation, and the capability list combines reasoning, tool use, structured output, temperature control, and attachment handling, which together make it suitable for retrieval-augmented assistants, document and image-grounded Q&A, and lightweight tool-calling pipelines. A 256,000-token context and matching output ceiling give it room for long-form document work and multi-turn agent traces without immediately hitting truncation. The EU designation, paired with Mistral AI's transparency and post-market monitoring commitments recorded in the dossier, suggests a deliberate fit for organizations prioritizing European data handling and auditable model provenance over maximum benchmark scale.
