OpenAI o3-mini is a compact reasoning model built to deliver strong performance on science, mathematics, and coding tasks at a fraction of the cost of larger models. Designed as a direct successor to o1-mini, it introduces three adjustable reasoning effort levels—allowing developers to dial up depth for complex problems or prioritize speed when latency matters. At its default medium reasoning effort, o3-mini matches the performance of the larger o1 model on demanding reasoning benchmarks such as AIME and GPQA—all while maintaining lower latency and cost. This combination of benchmark-matching performance and cost efficiency positions o3-mini as a practical choice for developers building STEM-focused applications, automated reasoning pipelines, or any workload where consistent, reliable problem-solving matters more than raw model size.
