Sonar Pro

Sonar Pro is Perplexity's flagship API in the Sonar family of search-oriented models, designed for building generative search experiences that depend on current information rather than static training data alone. The model is positioned for workflows that require real-time, web-wide research with answers grounded in trusted sources and accompanied by citations, making it well suited to analysts, journalists, researchers, developers, and enterprise teams handling large volumes of rapidly changing information. Where the lighter Sonar API targets fast, lightweight question answering, Sonar Pro is aimed at more demanding enterprise use cases that need nuanced, multi-step reasoning over longer contexts and richer source attribution.

The Sonar Pro API became generally available to all developers in January 2025, marking Perplexity's effort to expose its production search stack as a programmable service. Alongside answers with citations, the API exposes advanced capabilities such as JSON mode and search domain filters, which let developers steer which sources the model consults and structure the output for downstream pipelines. This combination of real-time retrieval, broader citation coverage per query than the standard Sonar tier, and configurability makes Sonar Pro a practical choice when answer provenance and source transparency matter as much as the response itself.
