When a request is sent to this key, OpenRouter automatically chooses an available free model at random from its catalog, then intelligently filters the candidates so only models supporting the requested features remain in the pool. Image understanding, tool calling, and structured outputs are explicitly named as feature filters the router applies, meaning the client simply describes what it needs and the routing layer handles compatibility. Because the selection happens behind the scenes, developers and end users do not have to track which free model is currently healthy or which one best matches a given task; OpenRouter also handles fallbacks automatically and aims for the most cost-effective option on each call.

This design makes the endpoint well suited for experimentation, learning, and low-volume prototyping where zero-cost inference matters more than reproducible behavior.
