Auto Router

OpenRouter operates as a unified API gateway that aggregates hundreds of underlying models behind a single endpoint, handling automatic model selection and fallbacks for each request. Within that platform, the auto routing approach is positioned as a way to balance cost-effectiveness with reliability without requiring the caller to manually pick a model for every interaction. Developers integrate through standard HTTP requests, client SDKs, or an agent SDK depending on how much control they want over routing decisions.

The practical appeal of an auto-routed endpoint is reducing operational overhead: instead of hard-coding a specific model, applications let the gateway pick the best fit per request, with automatic fallbacks if a chosen model is unavailable. This fits lightweight prototypes, chat assistants, and agent workflows where cost and uptime matter more than pinning to one underlying engine. Because the routing behavior is enforced at the platform layer rather than baked into a single model, switching preferred backends or adjusting cost-quality tradeoffs happens without rewriting application code.
