Model details
Phi 4 Multimodal
Phi-4-Multimodal is a compact multimodal model from Microsoft introduced alongside Phi-4-Mini in the Phi-4-Mini technical report. Rather than building a separate vision or speech system, it extends a shared language backbone with LoRA adapters and modality-specific routers, a Mixture-of-LoRAs approach that lets the model switch between inference modes without the modalities interfering with one another. The design supports combinations such as vision plus language, vision plus speech, and speech plus text within a single unified model, making it well suited to assistants and tools that need to take in images or audio alongside written prompts and respond coherently across them.
The practical appeal of Phi-4-Multimodal is its small footprint paired with unusually broad capability for its size. The speech and audio component is implemented with only about 460 million parameters in its LoRA module, yet the overall system reached the top of the OpenASR leaderboard at the time of reporting, illustrating how the routed adapter design can deliver strong specialized performance without bloating the base model. Microsoft describes the family as small open models, and Intel has documented platform-level optimization support for the Phi-4 family across AI PCs, edge devices, and data center hardware, signaling that Phi-4-Multimodal is positioned for efficient on-device and hybrid deployments where a single compact model needs to handle text, vision, and audio input together.
