OpenAI has released updated versions of its smaller GPT-6 models, Sol and Luna, positioning them as efficient extensions of the recently launched GPT-6 Astra flagship. The company frames the new releases as making the intelligence introduced with Astra more accessible and affordable across a wider range of tasks. API pricing for the GPT-6 Sol and Luna series is set at half the cost of the prior 5.6 generation, an improvement OpenAI credits to gains in caching and inference. The company claims Sol produces about half as many factual errors as its predecessor, reaching Astra-level reliability, and that both models handle coding and document tasks substantially better than Anthropic's competing Fable and Opus offerings. Luna targets high-volume clerical work such as summarization and extraction, while Sol is aimed at complex coding. The new models are rolling out to ChatGPT Work, Codex, the ChatGPT API, and Luna specifically to the desktop app and Free and Go users.
