Model details
OpenRouter Free Models Router
The Free Models Router is OpenRouter's dedicated routing layer for zero-cost inference, sitting alongside the Auto Router but with a strictly different job. Whereas openrouter/auto picks the strongest model from a curated set that includes paid options and can therefore bill the user, openrouter/free selects only from the free models available on OpenRouter and applies feature-aware filtering so requests get routed to a model that actually supports what is being asked of it. The router is reachable through gateways such as Kilo's, which surfaces OpenRouter's catalog alongside hundreds of other models at no inference markup, letting developers point the same key at multiple providers without rewiring their stack.
Practically, the Free Models Router is best understood as an exploration and prototyping tool rather than a production backbone. Its feature-matching behavior means a prompt that needs vision or reasoning will be steered to a free model capable of that input, while a plain text exchange can land on a lighter free endpoint, keeping every request inside OpenRouter's free usage limits. Through Kilo Gateway the route can be used in parallel with paid models and other vendors, which makes it useful for side-by-side comparison, fallback experiments, and learning how different free models handle the same prompt before committing budget to a paid tier.
