IBM Granite 4.2 8B is an 8-billion-parameter dense instruction-tuned language model in the Granite 4.2 family, post-trained from the corresponding Granite 4.1 base. Unlike Granite 4.0, which used a hybrid mixture-of-experts design, the 4.2 generation drops that approach in favor of fully dense decoder-only checkpoints, so the listed parameter count represents the entire active model. It is built around 40 layers and supports a 128K context window, with full instruction-following, chat, and tool-calling capabilities positioned for general-purpose enterprise workloads.
A notable capability addition is a native reasoning toggle with three operating modes—full, low-effort, and non-thinking—combined with reasoning-augmented tool calling, giving developers fine-grained control over how much deliberation the model applies before responding. The model serves twelve languages spanning English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Arabic, Czech, Italian, Korean, Dutch, and Chinese, broadening its fit for global teams. Practical runtime measurements show roughly 96 tokens per second throughput with around 0.20s P50 latency on the CoreWeave route, suggesting responsive performance for agent, retrieval, and chat pipelines that need reliable tool use without paying for larger frontier-scale models.
