Sonar Pro

Sonar Pro is a search-oriented model from Perplexity's Sonar family, designed to retrieve, analyze, and synthesize information from current web sources rather than relying only on static training data. It is built for users who need answers grounded in fresh, verifiable information, with the model producing detailed responses that include links to the publications it consulted. Perplexity positions the model as part of a broader lineup that combines live internet research with generative answers and citations, making it useful for analysts, journalists, developers, students, and researchers who regularly work with large volumes of information.

As a premium tier above the lighter Sonar API, Sonar Pro is aimed at more demanding, multi-step queries that benefit from a larger context window for nuanced searches and follow-up questions. It generally offers roughly double the citations per search compared with standard Sonar on average, supporting more thorough source attribution. The API also exposes advanced capabilities such as JSON mode and search domain filters, allowing developers to constrain and structure results. This combination of real-time web grounding, richer citation output, and extensibility makes Sonar Pro a practical fit for enterprise search experiences, market and competitive research workflows, and any application where factuality and traceability are central requirements.
