On February 13, 2026, alongside the previously announced retirement of GPT‑5 (Instant, Thinking, and Pro), we will retire GPT‑4o, GPT‑4.1, GPT‑4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini from ChatGPT. In the API, there are no changes at this time.
Model details
o4-mini is a compact reasoning model in OpenAI's o-series family, designed to think through problems before responding while keeping resource usage lean. It brings agentic capabilities to complex tasks: the model can search the web, analyze uploaded files with Python, reason about visual inputs, and generate outputs in structured formats. Rather than just outputting text, it is trained to decide when and how to deploy tools to produce detailed answers, making it suitable for multi-step problem solving where timing and output quality both matter.
The model was developed as part of the o-series lineage and underwent reinforcement learning training that refined its reasoning efficiency and tool-chaining behavior. Independent evaluation by METR found that o4-mini reached 50% task completion time horizons approximately 1.5 times those of comparable models, with internal benchmarks showing strong performance on STEM problems, visual mathematics, and code editing tasks. It outperforms its predecessor o3-mini and approaches larger models on certain benchmarks. The practical result is a model that handles high-throughput scenarios well, delivering reliable answers in under a minute while maintaining strong accuracy across coding, reasoning, and multimodal problem-solving workloads.
