GPT-OSS-20B is a compact Mixture-of-Experts model built to bring high-capability reasoning to resource-constrained environments. With 20 billion total parameters but only 3.6 billion activated per forward pass, the architecture uses 32 specialized expert modules with a routing system that selects relevant experts for each query, enabling efficient, targeted responses without processing the entire model. This design makes the model uniquely suited for consumer hardware, running smoothly on devices with just 16–32 GB of RAM. The model includes chain-of-thought reasoning with adjustable effort levels, allowing developers to balance depth against speed depending on task complexity.

The training approach draws on OpenAI's frontier work, combining reinforcement learning with techniques informed by their o3 and other advanced internal systems, resulting in a model that delivers o3-mini-level reasoning in a much smaller footprint. Beyond raw benchmarks, GPT-OSS-20B demonstrates strong tool use and function calling capabilities, even outperforming proprietary models like o1 and GPT-4o on agentic evaluation suites such as Tau-Bench and HealthBench.
